I've always had issues with a simulated controller on a phone game. Since there is no feedback like a controller, the process of trying to guess the direction your thumb is pulling a pad that you cannot see under your hand has made playing games difficult. The first image would be a default controller on a phone game that doesn't utilize the new features of modern smart phones such as 3D touch and a bezel-less screen. The second concept was something I created with these features in mind; working under the premise that a controller scheme for the phone doesn't need to hide the thumbs, but provide them with the effective space and feedback to work.
